When the Covid-19 pandemic started in 2020, our cooperative preschool closed temporarily, but was back in limited form in the summer of 2020. The first year of the pandemic required strict adherence to San Francisco and California Public Health Department directives, which at the time were detailed and specific. As the pandemic progressed, and vaccines rolled out, directives from the public health departments became less direct and allowed for judgment calls and some flexibility for early childhood programs. Our school had several immuno-compromised family members, both children and adults, who served as members of the teaching staff in the cooperative school structure. Because our school was small and community-focused, the parent-run Board of Directors determined our own evolving set of Health and Safety standards for families to follow. I created this document in my role as Board President and Interim Director in the summer of 2021. We continued to update and change our rules as the public health situation evolved, but this was the document sent out to families for their reference in the 2021/2022 school year. Since 2022, I have served in various volunteer roles at San Francisco Schoolhouse, including a member of the Communications Team and Development Team. In these positions, I authored emails to the parent community and created flyers for events. In a small K-8 school with a busy, but very involved, parent community, it is vital to have clear and comprehensive communications. The goal was often to anticipate any potential questions or points of confusion in the initial communications. The tone is kept warm, friendly, and light to keep a community feel in this tight-knit group. Below are a few examples of my emails to the parent community and event flyers.
